I have finally finished our taxes (almost, one more review and then they go in the mail). I knew we’d owe (hence the reason I’ve put them off until now) but I wasn’t quite expecting the big fat number that jumped off my computer screen and bit me on the nose.

Not only did they want several thousands of dollars from last year, apparently we’re supposed to prepay our taxes every quarter for this year. Ugh! I feel like I’m trapped in one of those Capital One commercials, only it’s the tax man doing the plundering.

Once I recovered from the shock of it all, it occurred to me that the adoption delays we’re facing might just be a blessing in disguise (yeah, yeah, the Big Guy is up there thinking “duhhhh…”). The longer the paper chase takes, the more time we have to raise funds for the balloon payment we’ll owe to the international agency. In the meantime, I’ll have to find another way to occupy my “spare” (ha!) time. Hmmm…

Update: The house supposedly went on the market today (someone drove by and hammered a sign in our yard), but I haven’t seen an MLS listing yet. Wish us luck!
