We’ve all heard about the AIDS crisis in Africa, and Ethiopia is no exception. But if you want to get a snapshot of what people are doing about AIDS and the 4.8 million Ethiopian orphans resulting from the crisis, watch Whose children are they now? AIDS orphans in Ethiopia (2006). View it here.
This 20-minute documentary takes a look at the people and agencies in Ethiopia who are working to take care of children orphaned by the AIDS pandemic in Ethiopia. Haregewoin Teferra, the subject of Melissa Faye Greene’s novel, There is No Me Without You, is interviewed.
This video is part of a series of films called Seeds of Hope : Meeting the Challenges of HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia, which are available for download (free) or purchase ($10) from Concentric Media, a non-profit documentary film company. They’ll also provide a free copy of a DVD with all 5 videos for educational purposes.
One of our big worries about adopting in Ethiopia is navigating the travel arrangements. Mind you, this is coming from the Queen of International Travel herself. Yes, the woman who can turn every outgoing penny into a frequent flyer mile somewhere down the road. Yes, the very same woman who cannot fly for two years, but still end up with a couple of free seats on one of the biggie airlines. And we’re not talking about schmucky seats either…our last freebie trip was first-class to Costa Rica (complete with smelly hiking boots and backpacks, but that’s a story for another time). Yes, the same woman who handles the majority of the extended family’s travel arrangements…yep, she-who-knows-how-to-”work it” is worried. (And she’s getting kind of annoyed at the third-person voice here…)
‘Love thy neighbor’ is not a piece of advice, it is a command.
